Detroit Show
Detroit Show
January 19th marked my second trip to Detroit to view the Detroit Auto Show. It's an opportunity for me to not only see the latest and greatest in automotive style and technology but to catch up with some friends from the Detroit area.
After spending some time getting reaquainted with my friends we all headed into Detroit to the Cobo Center which houses this massive event. We were greated outside the Cobo Center by "The Fist" as I call it, a rather amusing statue of an arm and fist.
Upon entering the show you feel like a kid in a candy store. Every major automobile manufacturer is represented through a variety of unique and spectacular displays designed to attract your attention. Unlike your regular car or truck show the Detroit Auto Show is all about you, the consumer. The public's reaction to the concept vehicles displayed at this and other shows can cause a design to sink or swim... which makes me wonder about the Pontiac Aztek.
Influences from the custom scene were found on quite a few vehicles at the show in the form of big rollers, clear tails and even a gas filler cap hidden behind a tail lamp on one GM concept. Mazda rolled out an impressive display including a B-series pickup on 20's, an import racer styled MP3 wagon and sedan and the incredible RX-8.
I reccoment checking out the show next year if you have the chance. It's a great opportunity to see some cool concepts and all the year's new models before you see them in the magazines or on the showroom floors.
