Every year the quiet streets of Reno, Nevada rumble as thousands of cars make their way to Hot August Nights. Most people have heard of this week long automotive extravaganza tucked away in the northern reaches of the Silver State. For those that have not, well… it is legendary. The 2009 event drew in over 6000 of the nation’s premier custom cars, trucks, and rods. More than 800,000 people were in attendance, making this one of the world’s largest car shows. It is a MUST attend event for any automotive enthusiast.
From the moment I stepped off of my plane in Reno and hopped in a friend’s car I was in awe. The entire city was crawling with rods and customs. Every stop light, every side street, and every public parking lot was packed with cars! I was speechless, reaching frantically for my camera when I was then promptly told, “This is nothing!” Was she ever right! There just isn’t enough time to see all of what Hot August Nights offers. This event covers two cities and a countless amount pavement. There is cruising in Sparks, NV along the bar district, show areas all over Reno, entire parking lots of the major casinos blanketed in show cars, and downtown is dedicated to hot rods. It seemed as if everywhere one turned there was a live band pumping out good ‘ol rock-and-roll into the late night. At one point, the Temptations made their way to the main stage and put on a traditional show bringing back memories for some while creating new ones for all. I encourage every car buff to make the trek to “The Biggest Little City in the World” to experience HAN at least once in their lifetime.
Hot August Nights is a car lover’s dream vacation. Cars everywhere, from street rods to rat rods, it was all there. Although the show is only open to pre-72 vehicles, there were plenty of other beautiful rides that weren’t part of the show itself in the side lots and on the streets.
