Slam Session
Slam Session
For those of you from the east coast, this show is probably one you've heard of or even been to in the past. Hosted by Animated Attractions, this show just keeps growing year after year. This year was no different.
The weekend started on Thursday after work. Seeing that I didn't even have my car finished, it wound up being a late night completing the finishing touches. Friday morning I met up with some of my boys from Negative Camber and Slammed Impressions on an exit ramp here in town. Like always, someone had to be almost an hour late. Once everyone showed up and we made a quick stop by the local McE-Dees. It was time for the seven-hour drive across the state. The morning was perfect for the drive: Sunny with just enough of a breeze. About halfway through the trip, we decided to stop and do some shopping and get some gas at current record prices. Getting gas nearly took all the show money I had with $1.59 for regular. Good thing I drive a 4 cylinder! We pulled into the show at the Pitt County Fairgrounds at about 4pm to find a good amount of rides already there. Several of the venders were already set up and some of the rides were being wiped off. We registered, got a schedule of events and stopped to talk to some of our friends from across the state. Then it was off to the hotel and to grab some food. After getting directions from the hotel to the car wash, which was just five minutes down the road, we were off for the fifteen-minute drive. The clocks there must be running slower than the rest of ours, because from were I'm from, five minutes is nowhere near fifteen minutes! We spent the rest of the evening hours cleaning and polishing while some of our friends stopped by the hotel to visit and show off new mods they just finished.
Saturday morning rolled around and we showed up at the show at 7am to get a good spot and to beat the long line of rides that were soon to be lining the road in front of the show. Once we had parked and all of the finishing touches were done, it was time to check out all of the rides and talk to friends that I only get a chance to see at shows. The fairgrounds quickly began to fill as the day began. I must say that the Animated Attractions crew had the show very well organized with the help of several golf carts and walky talkies. Drive in was quick and easy. The vendor row didn't take long to get packed with people buying the last little part needed to add to their ride. You could even get your favorite body part pierced by one of the vendors who had a tent set up just for that. What east coast show would be complete without vendors like Drop Em Wear and Auto Add Ons.
I spent most of the day talking with friends from some of the areas clubs like Pebble Pushers, Lowered Atmosphere, Negative Camber and Relaxed Atmosphere, just to name a few. The show rides ranged from all out low riders, to door draggin' minis, to some radical imports. The show wound up bringing in right at 800 rides and over 4000 spectators. The boys from Pebble Pushers spent all day walking the show testing out their "Hooter Meter" as often as they could find a willing contestant.
Once the sun went down, it was time for the fun to begin. The night was packed with activities like stupid people tricks (where some fool trusted the crowd enough to stage dive), burping contest, freestyle rap, and hunk contest. Then it was off to the "Adult Games" like the bikini contest, wet boxer contest and wet t-shirt contest. Even though it was a "T-shirt" contest, there wasn't much use of shirts. The games lasted well into the night.
Sunday morning began with checking out of the hotel and rolling to the show. Throughout the weekend, the road to and from the show was packed with enough show cars to have a show in the middle of the road. At every red light you could see every thing from imports wanting to race to trucks railing through the intersection. While on the way to the show, one of our boys suddenly pulled into the center lane and stopped. After 45 minutes or so he pulled into the show with a slight lean to the truck. Come to find out, he broke his frame on the smooth North Carolina roads we have. We spent all day trying to find someone with a welder so he could make the trip back home. Luckily, the support of fellow show goers, he had the frame welded and ready to go.
The hydro contest kicked off at 11am Sunday and was dedicated to Wayne Costa and his girlfriend Leslie Bowen who had tragically lost there lives on the way back from Tampa the weekend before. Several flowers were laid out in there remembrances. Following the hydros was the bikini finals then it was off to awards.
The awards were given out as smoothly and as organized as the rest of the show had been. Next years Slamm Session will be moved to a bigger and better show site. The exact location and date have not yet been set, but you can always stay informed at www.AnimatedAtractions.com and to check out the outcome of the 2001 show. Mike, Tiffany, Chris, Angela and the rest of the Animated Attractions crew put on a great show. This is one show on the east cost that's not worth missing…see ya there next year!
