Normally when I go to shows I know about them several weeks or even several months in advance. That makes it easy to make plans for. Now I had heard about a show coming up across the state, but I had never heard any details about it. The day before this show I had come home and checked my email and had a buddy pop up an IM and ask if I was going to the show with them the next day. Of course I had no clue what he was talking about so I started asking for details. After getting more info about this show, I decided to get things together and leave with everyone the following morning. The wife and I had already made plans for that night so I knew I would be up late getting things together for the two hour drive I had ahead of me at 8am the next day. By the time we got home that night it was already after 1am, so there wouldn’t be much time for sleep, but isn’t that the best part of shows anyway? LOL
The next day (Sunday March 28th), I met up at the local parts shop, Meanstreet Motorsports, with everyone else going to the show. By the time everyone was there, including the guys from the other Meanstreet down in South Carolina, there were a total of 19 of us. That made for a pretty good scene heading down I-40. A few miles into the trip, we started heading down the mountain. This was fun for most of the guys because that provided a curvy road for everyone hold in it. We stopped for gas and snacks about 2/3’s into the trip. Now imagine working at a small town gas station that sees only about2 customers an hour getting bombarded with 19 rides all at one time. Once we had all got back on the road, a couple of the guys flew past me like I was sitting still. Now at this point, I’m already doing over 80 mph just to catch everyone else, so these two guys had to be breaking 100 mph. About that time we spot a state trooper sitting in the grass. Knowing that one of them were busted, we proceeded to call the guys up front and warn them the trooper just pulled out of the grass with his lights on. Being I was one of the back cars, I could see the whole thing go down in my rear view mirror. Low and behold, he pulled someone over!! BUT…. it was an old couple in a stock car. Go figure! I bet the trooper looked up and saw the radar gun reading in the triple digits and the family car was the first thing he saw. Now that all the excitement was over, it was back to driving.
Once at the show, it was time to get a parking spot and wipe the rides down. Luckily the weather was nice for us and no one had to hit the car wash. After a quick pass through the show field, it was time to line up a couple feature shoots and get them out of the way. Through out the day there was plenty to do. There was the show itself, a 1/8 mile drag strip (which anyone could race their buddies for a small entry fee) and plenty of games going on. There was even a stereo contest off to one side. One of the guys I went down with broke a CV axle while running the strip. The cool part was that after a quick trip to the parts store, a couple of the venders at the show lent him the tools he needed to swap out the axle so he could make it home. By the time I had finished both shoots, it was time to head back home. Since I didn’t enter my car in the show, I could leave any time I wanted! LOL That was the first time I went to a show with less then 24-hour notice and it was actually pretty cool. You’ll have to try it some time!!
