The weekend of May 24th marked the beginning of the 2002 Show N Shine series season. In fact, with it being Memorial Day weekend, it was the(Unofficial) beginning of Summer for most. The first event of the show season is always the most exciting to me. This is the time each year when "the bug" usually first bites me. For those of you who have never caught "the bug" or experienced it's effects, let me explain: For many of us on the east coast, winters can be harsh and therefore many of us don't perform many modifications to our vehicles during this time. However, once the weather starts warming up and the show season gears up, so does my excitement. It's at this time when I start fantasizing (and planning) about what modifications to perform to my truck next. The show was held at the Colonial Mall in Burlington, NC. I arrived in town late Friday night to find a large portion of the parking lot roped off for the weekend event. I ventured inside the mall to meet up with a fellow enthusiast who needed a ride back to the hotel. Inside were the "cream of the crop" rides entered in the show with undercarriage components clean enough to eat off of.Saturday morning came too early. By the time I arrived back at the mall at 9am, many participants had already arrived, registered, and were busily polishing their rides. Oh, and did I mention it was hot?As I walked around eagerly examining and taking photos of each automotive attraction, I noticed that the field was very diverse. There all kinds of vehicles present with everything from an older drag car to a brand new Toyota Matrix and everything in between.

Since the judging for the event was drive-thru, there was always a seemingly endless line of vehicles wrapped around the parking lot, waiting to be judged. As the sun went down, the neon contest began. Lava lamps and colorful water bubble tubes were rather popular this year and many participants had some really extravagant light setups. The movie of the weekend seemed to be "The Fast and the Furious", as I counted at least 5 people playing it on their DVD systems. At the conclusion of the weekend, I had a rather nasty sunburn, a smile on my face, and an anxiousness for the next event.Special thanks to the Show-N-Shine Promotions staff for providing a kick ass event -oh, and free water for me.
