Is it true? Is Kris really writing an article? Yea, I guess I am… I have been the silent backbone of SSM for the entire term of its existence. In case you were wondering, I am the “Webmaster” of StreetSourceMag.com. I do all of the layout (graphic design) for the articles and design and build all of the cutting edge features of the community sections of SSM. None of the other staff members of SSM do any web stuff (and we still keep them busy). They give me the content (articles, pictures, etc) and it is my job to make it pretty and put it on the web. And let me tell you, it’s not easy, but it is fun. Now that everybody knows who I am, let me get to the point of this article (hehe).
Everybody grows up hoping to do something that changes history. Since SSM came about, I have noticed several online magazines come out of the woodwork. I have noticed that many of the pre-existing online mags have changed their styles to resemble SSM. Others, who came about after us, have also resembled the look of SSM. That tells me one thing…. “We must be doing something right”. We have many of the printed magazines on edge. How could an online mag compete with a printed mag? Don’t ask me, but they seem to be showing fear.
I remember back when SSM was still a thought in the back of Garrick and I’s mind. I always wanted to create an awesome show vehicle related website. Actually, I wanted to create a site that had every feature that anyone could ever need, or hope for, in an automotive website. When we decided to do it, my thought was to create a “website”, Garrick’s idea was to create an “online Magazine”. He wanted to make it have pages that you could flip through like a normal printed magazine. I thought, “How the hell would I pull that one off?”. After hours of pondering the idea, I decided, “Well Garrick, I’ll give it a shot.”. And that was the birth of SSM, as we now know it.
I would love to look back when I am old and retired and be able to see that SSM changed history. Gauge Magazine was the first (as far as I know) popular online magazine. They kinda paved the way for us. In turn, we are further paving the way for other online mags. Granted, we have no plans to be overtaken by them (friendly competition of course), but we recognize their place in the industry. We are very flattered that they see our style as a cornerstone to success. Good luck guys! Just try to keep up (if you can) haha
