Drop Zone 2001 was Presented by Magical Minis, the show was located at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem Oregon on July 27-29th.Usually one of the masters of the one day show in the Northwest, the crew from Magical Minis decided to focus their usually high one day turn outs into a 3 day event. Would this end up being a wise decision, only the weekend could tell. After being picked up by Donnie and Shelly from the airport, I had a chance to hang out with the crew from Magical before their weekend would begin. I have to say that this group of auto enthusiasts are cool individuals and a club that will be putting out some phat rides for years to come. With the setting up of the show grounds Friday morning, cars where already beginning to line up at the gates to get in at the 4pm gate time. With time approaching the gates where open and clubs headed to the camping area to begin setting up camp and ready for the nights festivities. While the fair grounds were fairly large, Jason from Magical let me borrow his custom lowered scooter to scoot my skinny ass around. Come to find out, while turning at the correct angles the scooter would throw up some killer sparks, needless to say I was entertained till the night began to fall.As the nighttime arose so did the number of entries into the show grounds. By this time it was reminding me more of a southern run more then anything except the girls where getting completely naked instead of the usual hooter displays. The more people had to drink the crazier the night became. Instead of a cruise, it was turned into a drag strip, the only rides out and about where the ones laying body for all to see the paint lit up by the sparks from down under. As the night became late the morning show goers took to their tents for a quick nap before sunrise, so I decided to do the same.

As I returned to the show grounds Saturday morning, to my surprise even more rides had shown up after I had left and even more where at the gates when I came through. I quickly gathered my camera gear together so I could shoot the show and collect features before the day's games begun. With covering rides from all over the Northwest and Canada, I decided to break my ventures in to 2 halves. With the morning gone, I went to rest my feet (I know I'm a wuss…) and watch some club challenge volleyball. With amusing myself for a while I continued my coverage and finished just in time for the airbag throw and tug a war competitions. For those that weren't to interested in the club challenges, Donnie's sister had set up a Tattoo and Piercing shop indoors where they stayed "very busy" all day long. As I sat and watched, I don't think I've seen so many pairs of nipples get pierced in my life. After time, Myself, Donnie, Jason and Forrest all decided to get our labret's pierced to join the action. After shooting a couple rides I was off to eat before the night would bring joy to the eye's of many young and old alike. With my returning to the show grounds many people had got a head start on the drinking so it was time to bring Jack out and get things going. The night's first agenda, the bikini contest. With Junior from Tailgate and myself properly positioned in front of the stage, we were sure to enjoy the contest while snapping a few photos. As we watched a few beautiful girls show all, the winner went to a brunette from Idaho who wasn't shy about the sayin' "skin to win!". With the bikini contest over it was time for the low contest which was ran by who was willing to drag the body panels of there rides the furthest, which was won by a member of IV Everlow Idaho. After hanging out and meeting with old friends and new, it was time for lights out for the night to get ready to head home the next morning. The crew from Magical did an awesome job with the show and everything ran smoother then just about any 3-day event I've ever been to. I will definitely be back next year and hope to see as many of you there as possible to enjoy what they had to offer.Garrick ArendsEditor
