World Of Wheels
World Of Wheels
Every year when the weather gets cold and the show season finally comes to and end, I always get a little down and out because I cant find anything to do with my weekends. Then once show season picks back up I can't WAIT till it ends. I guess it's a never-ending process.
As a young guy growing up in Slidell, LA (only a short 20 miles from New Orleans) I always enjoyed my grandfather bringing me to our favorite show. We would load up in one of his antique cars rather it be a 64 Plymouth Fury or his Lincoln and head across the lake to World of Wheels. As we would walk around the show he would teach me what made something custom and tell me what it took to hand make that or the detail an owner put into building something. It was here I got to gain a respect for the custom scene.
As I grew up I never grew out of my love for customs nor my love for World Of Wheels. This year was totally different for me though. This year I wasn't just walking around enjoying what was before my eyes but this year I was there to capture it for others to enjoy too.
AS I arrived Friday night and gathered my credentials I made my way to the Show floor were I was met by my old crew Mike Magee, Brad Rupert, Lee Dering and Sandy Billiot. Now you have to understand hanging with these guys means one thing…. TROUBLE. After years of hanging out with the crew I can recall MANY hilarious and wild times. As we made our way around we came up on a long time friend Doc or now known as " LIL JESSIE", the reason he is known as "LIL JESSIE" is because not only does this fool build Mini choppers for a living he also has a tattoo in his palm "Pay up Sucka". Throw in the fact he is only 5'4" and you have a "LIL JESSIE" Dude has watched too much Discovery channel. But if you know Doc you know there is NOTHING we put past this crazy fool.
This year was allot different then years past in numerous ways. First I've never seen such a great turn out of custom trucks before in all the years I've been attending World of Wheels. First Scooby, Duck and Kevin Holland from Negative Camber all had there dually's on hand to admire, Second there was ALLOT of mini trucks that totally took me by surprise. In years past there might be one or two and those were the ones we brought but this year the minis were in full force. Even the Import scene got on board and an entire club was there in full force.
As we made our way from booth to booth we of course ran into life long friend Cory from Drop Em' and had to say WASSUP. After buying a new Wardrobe it was off to see the rest of the show. As we walked around I ran into an OLD friend that I have not seen in years, from my Car Audio days Steven and his friend Rapper Mannie Fresh. Mannie is signed onto the Cash Money Records label from right here in New Orleans. After getting some pics of my boys with Mannie, we made our way over to check out his new Harley Dually on 22's and his extremely clean Camaro.
After calling it a night Friday night I made my way home and gathered some much needed sleep.
Saturday evening I made my way back to the show to gather some coverage I had missed Friday night. Saturday night we ran into old Friend Gator, the host Mardi Gras Nationals and Cory from Prestige Autosound. After making arrangements to meet them in the French Quarter later that evening we met up with the shows promoter and took an elevator ride to the TOP of the Super Dome for some aerial coverage of the show.
As we left the show and made our way to the Quarter we received a call from the Assorted Mini's crew, since they too was in town for the World of Wheels. Now incase you don't know who Assorted is they are the crew that brings you Greenville's ShowFest every year. As we met up with Chad, Keith, Rick and the rest of the crew we made our way to Pat O'Brien's were we met Gator and crew. Well from there it's hard to say were all we went because well I don't really remember. I know that someone decided that while at Bourbon Blues Club that we needed an Entire TRAY of shots, and well from there my friends the rest is well history.
