It's amazing that a whole month has gone by so quickly. What a month it has been! I honestly think September 11th will be a day that no one in America will ever forget. As we watch the activity at "Ground Zero", we wonder what we can do to help, how families have been touched and how lives have changed. I would like to take just a small moment to say Thanks to all that have helped with the rescue and recovery efforts. By way of blood, money or time you are a hero in our eyes.
This month we are going to look at head-units and how to choose the right one for your needs. It is so easy to buy a head-unit that really doesn't fit your needs but only to find out to late. No matter if you are planning on competing or hitting the strip on Sat. night a head-unit is probably the single most important purchase you will make in your car audio system.
First we want to look long term and I know this is hard for you to do but try. When you do this answer these few questions?
1) Do I ever plan on adding any amplifiers?
2) Do I ever plan on adding Multi-media?
3) What is my average time I spend in my ride in a day?
4) Am I easy distracted while driving?
5) What format do I listen to the most 8-track, cassette, CD, minidisk or maybe just the radio?
The reason I ask these questions is to try to help you make this decision a lot easier for you.
1) First if you are going to add amplifiers then you need to find a head-unit with RCA outputs. Something to consider is how many amps do you plan on adding? Look for a unit with high voltage RCA outputs because this will make your system sound better and the amps run more efficiently. If you don't planning on adding amps, that's fine too. Look for a unit that has high power outputs. But keep in mind that just cause a unit says it's 45x4 don't expect this to be true. Look at a 45x4 amp and then look at a 45x4 head-unit note the size difference. Head-unit's use chip amplifiers, which aren't as clean and efficient.
2) The next question was multi-media and this is due to you want to be able to hear the porn-stars not just see them on screen when you riding in your ghetto sled.
3) The more time you spend in your vehicle the more music you are going to listen to so maybe you might want to consider a head-unit with changer capabilities.
4) If your mind is on everything but what your doing then consider remote control capabilities. Keep's your eye on the road more and not looking down at the head-unit.
5) The most important thing to consider is what do you listen to the most. I saved this one for last for a reason, cause this is were people make the biggest mistake. Just cause you still have 8- tracks good luck finding the newest model in 8-track head-units. Look long term were the trends are going and what is the easiest to use. CD's are probably going to be around for a little longer so purchasing a nice CD head-unit would not be a foolish mistake. As the age-old story goes you get what you pay for, keep this in mind. I once worked for a large chain of electronics stores and it amazed me how many people got mad when the $79.99 CD player they bought as a gift for there loved on was broke two months down the road. Spending a couple hundred dollars is on a good name-brand unit is a wise investment.
Remember if the mirrors aren't shakin you've been takin.
