38th Annual Starbird OKC
The Darryl Starbird Rod & Custom car show began according to custom. The members of Pleasures Trucks and Compacts arrived at the Cox Business Services Center (formerly the Myriad Convention Center) on Thursday morning to begin parking cars and trucks. After we parked in our designated spots, I set up the display for my clothing company, Streetskinz. At about noon we opened our first beer of the day. It was 30 seconds later when the biggest "cock" of a security guard busted us for drinking. From then on we took it upon ourselves to give him hell. We had an entire hallway of the show area dedicated to our vehicles, so we were in party mode all weekend.
Friday we began to drink about 10:30 am. Since outside food and beverages were not allowed in the CBSC, we had to invent clever ways of sneaking alcoholic beverages into our area. We sat around our vehicles and drank beer all day long. That day, I never really looked at any of the other vehicles entered in the show. I attended the Darryl Starbird show in two different cities just prior to this show, and it consisted of pretty much the same vehicles. Since I was a vendor at the show, I had to stay until 11:00 Friday night. Later, we all walked to a club down the street in the Bricktown area, which is downtown Oklahoma City's major source of night life. Drink, drink, drink, blah, blah, blah.
Saturday morning started off slow. After getting a bite to eat we noticed there was no beer left from Friday. I think it had all been consumed by Dave "the beer man" Tedford. Luckily, the three liters of Crown Royal we had in the ice chest would satisfy our alcoholic thirst. I spent a few hours in the afternoon looking at show vehicles and meeting new friends. Most of the evening was spent making fun of security guards and hunting for "mullets". Regan catagorized all the different types of mullets we saw at the show. Oklahoma has to be the mullet capital of the world. Saturday night we had a big birthday party for Jimmie "Juan" Broyles at local nightclub. Again, drink, drink, drink, blah, blah, blah.
Sunday morning started even slower than Saturday. Everyone seemed very tired and worn out from the late night partying. The security guards didn't even bother giving us a hard time. All we could think about was the trophy presentation, so we could go home shortly after. We tried driving our R/C cars around the show, but after a few wrong landings on the 10 foot quarter pipe they don't seem to operate quite right. The awards ceremony went very slow as usual, and Darryl Starbird handed the awards out personally. We were very nice to him this time, and didn't give him hell like years past.
The show turned out to be very good. PTC took home several trophies and a $1,000 cash prize for our hard work in the "best club display" category. The Darryl Starbird show is always the first show of the season for us, and hopefully will mark the beginning of a great year of shows, fun, and friends.
