Outlaw Imports
Well now that show season is upon us, it's time to break out the cleaning supplies, EZ up tent and the camera. That's exactly what I did the last Sunday of April when I attended the Spring Slamfest hosted by Outlaw Imports at the Farmington Race Park in Farmington, NC. This show offered everything you could imagine to keep you busy. There was the show (of course) as well as drag races down a 1/8 mile track, burn out contest, bikini contest, keg tossing contest and a full out stereo contest hosted by Freeman's Car Stereo. Since it was at a drag strip, there were plenty of concessions too. There was venders set up around the front of the show with parts, food and clothes for sale. Drop-Em Wear even had their trailer set up to show off all their new products.
The day started out early as me and the wife had about a 2-hour drive to the show. Other than the dense rainy fog, it was a pretty smooth trip. We met up with some guys who live on the way and rode into the show with them to register and set up the tent so we could claim our spot before the crowd showed up. Then it was off to the car wash to get all the bugs off the front of the car. About the time we were done washing the car, about 50 cars showed up. Talk about perfect timing!! Now that we were all cleaned up and ready to show, it was off to the show field. By this time the roads were dry and the sun was starting to peak out of the clouds. When we arrived back at the race park, the field was already starting to fill up with custom show rides. Once all of the finishing touches were done to get the car ready for the show, it was time for all the fun to begin. The sound of the announcer coming over the speakers led us over to the start of the drag strip were the burn out contest was just getting started. There was everything from a brand new civic to a Pontiac 6000 to even motorcycles competing for the cash prize. Before the contest was even half over, you could barely see the show field for all the smoke. There's nothing like the smell of burnt rubber in the air.
Now that the burn out contest was out of the way it was time to clean up the rubber and make room for the drag cars to run the 1/8th mile strip. There were everything from almost factory cars running the strip as well as full out drag cars such as the worlds fastest Dodge Neon from Team Phatridz with a total of 53 race entries in 6 divisions. A crowd of over 3000 people packed the stands and the area in front of the fence for most of the day as cars were eliminated and the finals were ran. Meanwhile over in the show field they were having contests such as a keg toss contest where guys could show how strong (or weak) they really were and as well as a bikini contest.
By the end of the day everyone had started to pack up their stuff and prepare for the awards ceremony. Luckily most people were already packed BEFORE awards because right as the first few trophies were passed out the skies opened up and started to flood the show with heavy rain and hail……..did I mention the HAIL!?!?! Luckily it wasn't bad enough to cause any damage, but that's just to things that don't go together; "Hail" and "car show"! LOL The severe weather only lasted a few minutes luckily, and then it was on with the trophies. Best of show was given to Chris Waldon and his Honda Civic with major body mods and a set of Accord headlights. Not bad for his first show out of the shop! The largest club award went to Team Rush Factor with 37 rides competing.
